Doctoral School

In 2017 the collaboration was set, merged into a consortium in 2018, between Fondazione Golinelli, the Alma Mater Studiorum of Bologna and the Politecnico di Milan, creating the first Doctoral School in "Data Science and Computation" authorized by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities, and Research - MIUR.

The three institutions were joined by the Italian Institute of Technology - IIT of Genoa, the Interuniversity Consortium, the Center for Supercomputing - Cineca and the National Institute of Nuclear Physics - INFN, in order to carry out the long-term strategic project.

The course

The aim is to train young researchers in becoming data scientists, which are fairly new professional figures in Italy and in Europe, however, are already very much in demand by the labor market and by scientific research teams of the most important public and private institutions, throughout Italy and the world.

The professional profile of a data scientist is characterized by multidisciplinary training, which aims to generate innovation and extract value from data, with the awareness of their ethical, social, scientific, technological, cultural and economic implications.

The element that characterizes the doctoral school, in addition to the excellence of the teaching staff, is the cultural model: technological and computational investigations are planned, following an interdisciplinary approach, that set convergent trajectories between digital technology and search applications. These include Genomics and Bioinformatics, Big Data, Smart Cities & Societies, Personalized Medicine, Machine Learning and Deep Learning, and Computational Physics.

In 2017 (XXXIII Cycle) 14 scholarships were awarded. 13 were awarded in 2018 (XXXIV Cycle). The course has a duration of four years and includes a study abroad program.

The model also provides the involvement of companies that become true partners of the program.

The administrative advisor of the School is the University of Bologna, while Fondazione Golinelli fosters the relations and agreements with the companies. The offices are those of the partner institutions. Opificio Golinelli is home to the Steering Committee and hosts part of the educational and cultural activities of the doctoral school.
